Fatman Scoop x Mr Doodle – hosted by PLINTHS.LONDON

It is certainly not every day that we get approached by an international musician and rapper requesting that we collaborate with them on a bespoke project, but back in October our bespoke production team was faced with an almost surreal enquiry from Fatman Scoop, the American Artist who has written and produced music for over 20 years working with the likes of PitBull, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey. As you can imagine our team were delighted to have had this opportunity to work with Fatman Scoop and help him realise his vision, creating unique items of furniture for his New York home.

Having put the items of furniture into production, Fatman Scoop announced a further element to this project that would turn a relatively simple item of furniture into a work of art. Scoop wanted to embellish his items with the work of Mr Doodle, the artist who is renowned for making doodling an art form. Mr Doodle has doodled his way around the world and has collaborated with some amazing brands including Adidas and MTV. His work can be seen on the products of major fashion houses, floors, doors and now on the furniture of legendary American Rapper, Fatman Scoop.

The PLINTHS.LONDON team worked relentlessly to get the two artists together under one roof, coordinating the schedules of two very busy men living in two different continents! Finally it was agreed that all parties come together in the PLINTHS.LONDON showroom in the UK, allowing Mr Doodle and Fatman Scoop the opportunity to meet in person for the first time. Mr Doodle would patiently doodle all over the coffee table under the watchful eye of Scoop and the PLINTHS.LONDON team. As the piece of furniture was being created the interactive art form was coming to life through social media, streaming live on all social media channels and captured for the fans of Fatman Scoop and Mr Doodle.

Having spent several hours working on the items, Mr Doodle had finally produced a truly unique item that would take centre stage in the home of Fatman Scoop. The collaboration was a fantastic success for everyone involved, and it was a real pleasure having the opportunity to work with two extremely talented artists. We would again like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in this project and to Fatman Scoop and Mr Doodle who left us all with some amazing memories that we will never forget.

Throughout September our team have been working closely with the amazing textiles and soft furnishings company ‘One Nine Eight Five’. The company were looking for a flexible display solution and scheme that could work across various platforms, from store in store, to window installations and pop-up shops. Our brief was simple, we needed to provide a range of fixtures that enhanced the products on display, were adaptable, cost effective and durable. By utilising our standard range of metal frame plinths, consoles and clothing rails, our team were able to offer the client a basic kit that could be scaled up or down according to the specific display requirements.

The kit was formed around the beautiful gold metal frames, utilising different top surfaces including black ash and natural ash.  The flexibility in the fixtures enabled the client to evolve and adapt according to the collection they are presenting, or the environment that they were presenting in.

As well as guiding the client through the process of selecting the appropriate display kit, our visual merchandising team were on hand to help One Nine Eight Five merchandise the product in situ, creating an instant shop-able space that is appealing to the eye and accessible for the consumer. Working with soft furnishings is always a challenge when it comes to merchandising a space, and one of the main issues that our team often get presented with, is “how do we display throws, bed linen and other large textiles in a way that is appealing?” The answer here is always dependent of the fixtures, but there are always effective ways to make any fixture work for your needs.

A few pointers on how to get the look and create the perfect product display:

1) Make sure you select a flexible kit that can be adapted to your needs, think about what heights and shop-able surface areas you require. Include variety in your fixture heights – you do not want to have everything at the same height as this can make things look flat
2) Think about the texture and colour of the fixtures – you want to make sure they work with your product and do not work against them or clash in any way
3) Review your floor plan and make sure your selected kit fits and works aesthetically in situ – dimensions are key!
4) Create interest in the formation of your kit, do not just line everything up side by side along one wall – consumers want to be taken on a journey so give them something to walk around and build interest – this can be achieved even when presenting the smallest of collections.
5) When bringing in your product, make sure you consider your ‘hero products’. Hero products need to be enhanced in a space, so consider giving them more room and a more prominent placement within the space. Adding focused lighting can be a great way of drawing attention
6) Start layering your product on the fixtures – avoid overloading your fixtures with too many items, less is often more and you can always replenish the stock once it has sold off the fixture. Think about layering in quantities of 3 – 5
7) Soft furnishings can be folded and layered, also consider rolling the items to create more interest
8) Utilising rails can be a great alternative to folding soft furnishing, consider hanging the items from the rails using a basic knot method, this is visually interesting and easy to achieve. You can then layer the folder items in organised piles at the base of the rail
9) Bringing in a few hangers can really make a difference – if you can hang items then this is a really good way of maximising what you have out on display. You can even replicate items that are folded, and have duplicates hanging in the full colour range. This will also reduce the amount of folding and unfolding you have to do in store

Assisting our clients with Visual Merchandising and guidance on fixtures is what we do best. Our team are dedicated to making sure you get what you need, and guiding you through the entire process. We pride ourselves on having over 30 years experience in the retail and design trade and we want to offer that extended knowledge to all of our clients.

A few words from the Director of One Nine Eight Five, Eleanor Nadimi:

“PLINTHS.LONDON have been amazing from the word go, as a company we had been searching for a supplier who could offer us more than just furniture for hire, we really needed someone to help us and guide us in a visual sense. Working in soft furnishing is amazing, but styling them can be a much greater challenge. The VM team at PLINTHS.LONDON really nailed it for us, we are delighted with their gorgeous fixtures and all of their in-depth knowledge around Visual Merchandising and styling”

Mirror and reflective surface bring life and drama to an environment, bouncing light, shape and form around a space and enhancing the products on display. Mirrored displays do soo much more than just act as a reflection, they change the dynamic of a space and breath life into the installation. At PLINTHS.LONDON we have always loved experimenting with reflective surfaces, and how they work together in a retail or interior space. Simply adding the element of mirror completely changes the dynamic, and this look can be so easily achieved by adding in a select few items that have a mirrored finish. As part of our hire range we have several products that embrace the use of mirror, from our luxurious Mirrored L’Concept console table, to our metal frame collections with gunmetal mirror tops. In addition to our standard mirrored items we also have full manufacturing capabilities to produce full mirrored plinths in both acrylic, and toughened gunmetal mirror.

Our visual merchandising team have been busy experimenting with set composition and the use of mirror, as detailed in our latest photoshoot. All the items in this shoot are available through www.plinths.london and our team are on hand to help you achieve this look with minimal effort and expense.

Creating a meaningful display concept that is well-executed, dynamic and full of impact can be a challenge at the best of times. We understand that getting this right is never easy and that’s why our skilled team of spatial planners and visual merchandisers spend numerous hours playing around with new spacial designs and installation concepts, utilising a catalogue of products that are available through PLINTHS.LONDON. Many of our clients have struggled to visualise different display plinths, products and materials together in a space, so that’s why we encourage our clients to come to our showroom space and experiment with our team to create truly dynamic sets that work for them and their brands.

As part of our latest product launch we have put together 3 sets using 8 items from our new mirrored collection. The 8 items (rails, hangers, plinths and platforms) have been mixed in with extra props to enhance the set and emphasise the use of reflective surfaces. By utilising different sizes, shapes, form and materials we have created a basic installation that is instantly transferable to a retail space, pop up and store in-store concept. We hope that this series of installation setups provide you with some insight and inspiration.

The foundations of PLINTHS.LONDON have always been deeply rooted in the Arts and for many years we have been supporting galleries, fashion brands and emerging artisans with product displays, exhibitions, and Pop-Up shops. Our business draws inspiration and support from all areas of the creative industry and it has been our goal to facilitate as many creative partnerships as possible. We understand the importance of partnerships and what the marriage of two groups can create, and it has been this understanding that brought us together with Innovation RCA, the Royal College of Arts centre for enterprise, entrepreneurship, incubation and business support. In June Innovation RCA supported a talented group of 16 entrepreneurs with a Pop-Up showcase in Central London. The Pop-Up event, titled INTRODUCING was a fantastic opportunity for emerging talent and new businesses to present their collections to the general public, and the event was extremely well received.

PLINTHS.LONDON were delighted to have been asked to help facilitate and sponsor the INTRODUCING Pop-Up event. As well as contributing all of the display elements for the Pop-Up space, our team provided general guidance on the design schemes for the showcase as well as support with product placement, visual merchandising and general styling. Our visual merchandising team came up with a classic design for the space that would allow the brands the opportunity to present their products in the best way possible, as well as working seamlessly within the overall exhibition space. Clusters of varying size white plinths, platforms and cubes were used throughout the space providing height and form mimicking the rise and fall of the stones at the Giants Causeway. These cluster forms within the white venue space gave the Pop-Up a sense of impact and dialogue that enabled the 16 brands to showcase their work in an organised yet individual manner, true to their own design beliefs.

  • Elements used in this Pop-Up concept included: 60 Classic White Wooden Plinths (in various sizes), Platforms to provide height, Jewellery Plinths with internal lighting, Marble additions applied to plinths surfaces, glass domes and other VM props.
  • Recreating this Pop-Up scheme would cost approximately £18,000 (including all design proposals, products, visual merchandising and event styling)

New store inspirations – CELINE, SoHo, New York

Working in the design industry we are inspired by the wonders of nature, materials, architecture, art and society around us.  On rare occasions you find yourself immersed in environments that encapsulate all of these points of reference, and it was during a recent visit to the Celine store in Manhattan where this became very apparent. From the moment you walk into the store you are met by giant glass and stainless steel doors that look like something out of the volts of the Bank of England, as they slowly swing open your eyes are overloaded with the sights of beautiful clothing, handbags, shoes and accessories all sitting amongst the space like jewels glistening in the New York sunshine. The vision of Hedi Slimane (Creative Director) is one of complete beauty and elegance mixed with a sophisticated masculine edge. His unique store designs bring retail and interior architecture into the same playing field, with the interiors supporting the beauty of the Celine clothing and the clothing supporting the interior like a fine piece of art hanging in an opulent ball room.

All aspects of the store work so perfectly together with such thoughtful use of materials. Show stopping black and white marble walls great the floors with such ease and elegance, juxtaposed against monolithic columns clad in light oak, white travertine and polished stainless steel. As your eye wonders around the store taking in the fantastic materials on show, you can’t help but notice the consistent use of a shadow gap, a builders nightmare but a design detail must have! There are no two surfaces in the Celine store where you don’t have a shadow gap and it is this attention to detail that elevates the concept to another level. With all these materials packed into a relatively small retail space, you would expect it to be overwhelming, however this pallet of colour and materials work together like a dream.

If you are as inspired as we were by this amazing space then you may want to consider utilising some of our products at PLINTHS.LONDON. We are always striving to bring the current trends to the forefront of the furniture rental market, and our current product ranges take into consideration changing trends, materials and styles.
